Course summary
This program is to prepare urban social workers whose knowledge, values, ethics, and skills enable them to intervene effectively with distressed African American communities, as well as other communities and populations at risk of negative outcomes and overall well being. The program goals include: to prepare autonomous practitioners committed to working competently and effectively with urban families, groups, organizations and communities; to socialize students to the values and ethics of the profession of social work; to address challenges, issues and problems of the urban environment toward the alleviation of human suffering and enhancing the quality of life of oppressed, at-risk, and vulnerable urban populations; to develop an appreciation for the historical and contemporary contributions of African Americans to the field of social welfare as a context for social work practice; to prepare students with the knowledge, skills and commitment to address oppression and social injustice in all forms and to promote the fullest understanding of the reality and complexity of human diversity as a basis for culturally competent social work practice.

Entry requirement for international students
Students must have certified copies of supporting academic credentials and students from countries where English is not the medium of instruction, must demonstrate their ability to use the English language by scoring a minimum of 550 on the TOEFL.
