The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures offers programs in twelve languages which address the academic, intellectual, and professional needs of students. A student may earn a B.A. in Spanish or an M.A. in Hispanic Studies or a B.A. in German or Latin. Students may earn a minor in these languages as well as Italian, Ancient Greek, Russian, and Chinese, as well as Classical Studies. Students may fulfill their language requirements with any of these languages as well as Arabic, Biblical Hebrew, Japanese, Portuguese, or Swahili. The faculties are active researchers recognized nationally and internationally in their various disciplines. Members of the faculty serve on committees for national organizations and on editorial boards for scholarly journals. The Spanish faculty biennially hosts the Louisiana Conference of Hispanic Languages and Literatures. The faculty’s commitment to research is matched by their contributions to teaching. Many members of the department have received University and College awards which recognize their distinction in scholarship and teaching.

LSU has 17 residence halls with architectural styles ranging from a Renaissance style typical of the new Residential College Complex and the older core of the campus, to the modern style typical of the halls along Campus Lake. Residence hall rooms can generally be described in one of two ways. Traditional rooms, most common among the older halls, are usually large with high ceilings and free-standing furniture that student can arrange as they desire. All rooms are air-conditioned with window units in each room. Modern rooms, common in newer halls with central air-conditioning, are more compact but maximize living space by using built-in furniture. Smoking is not permitted in rooms or any other areas in the residence halls. East and West Campus Apartments provide state-of-the-art accommodations, including private rooms with telephone service, basic cable TV, in room data connections, washer/dryer combinations, and full size kitchens with microwave ovens and garbage disposals. Each apartment has attractively furnished living rooms, bedrooms, and dining areas. In the Power Activity Building students will find additional study space, activities, programs, a TV lounge, email work stations, and professional and student staff to provide assistance as needed.
