The Art Department's goal is to prepare the students to be arts practitioners, with the technical and critical skills needed to be active and responsible participants in society. While learning technical skills of art production, the students will explore philosophical questions of self-expression, identity, community, multicultural values, and meaning in art. The changing world challenges artists to become visionary leaders and practical participants who can analyze, research, organize, and produce artwork that transforms people, places, and lives. The power of truly contemporary art lies in artists ability to connect themselves in reciprocal relationships with their diverse audiences - in order to create a more humane life that is relevant to time and place.

All halls are located on main campus and provide study areas, recreation rooms, laundry facilities, kitchens and computer stations. All rooms are equipped with telephone, Internet and cable television access. Typically, two students share a room and four students share a bathroom in what are known as “suite-style” residence halls. There are a limited number of private rooms, where students have their own room and share a bathroom with one other student. There is a common kitchen/living room area in each residence hall that all residents in that building share. GCSU offers a number of choices for on-campus living, from the traditional residence hall on main campus to apartment-style living at The Village. Living on campus is a good way to make friends and to adjust to life at GCSU.
