Course summary
Students in this program can develop their ability to carry out scientific investigation; understanding and critical evaluation of biological information; communication through traditional and electronic media; application of biological training to careers. These learning outcomes are achieved through a set of core courses in cell biology, molecular genetics, ecology and evolution as well as fundamental courses in other core disciplines of biology. Laboratory courses enriched with educational grant support engage students in investigative research utilizing modern techniques such as flow cytometry and mass spectrometry, thus also preparing students for graduate programs in biological disciplines or for employment.
Program modules
The courses are: Introductory Biology sequence NOT Pass/Fail BIOL 117 and 118, Introductory Chemistry sequence, NOT Chem 101-102 CHEM 107 and 108; or CHEM 111, Organic Chemistry sequence CHEM 231, 332, and 335 [Organic Chemistry I, II and Lab], Required course in Statistics Select from MATH 147 or BIOL 458. Consult with a biology faculty advisor if you have a second major that requires a different course in statistics, Required Biology core courses NOT Pass/Fail, Cell Biology/Molecular Genetics requirement -- BIOL 301 (Molecular Genetics) or BIOL 311 (Cell Biology) AND Ecology/Evolution requirement -- BIOL 351 (Mechanisms in Evolution) or BIOL 378 (Macroevolution) or BIOL 355/373 (Ecology), Required Biology Electives, NOT Pass/Fail 16 credits encompassing 3 laboratories, 16 additional credits in BIOL courses numbered 300 and above. At least three courses must have a laboratory / field component. Only up to four credits can come from BIOL 494, 495, 496, 497, and 498. Only one lab / field requirement can come from BIOL 495, 497 and 498, Residency Requirement A minimum of 16 credits in the set of core courses and/or required biology electives must be taken at Binghamton University. Required Mathematics and Science electives 8 credits, For breadth beyond Biology or biologically related sciences, additional mathematics, physical science, and computer science courses selected from the following list: CS 140, ENVI 201, GEOG 360, one from among GEOL 111/112/113/114/115/121, MATH 221, MATH 222, PHYS 121, PHYS 122 (or PHYS 131, PHYS 132) or courses that require these as prerequisites; CHEM courses that require CHEM 108, CHEM 332, CHEM 335 as prerequisite; other courses only by approval of faculty advisor. Entry requirement for international students
Students should be a high school graduate. They must have SAT or ACT scores. Non native English speakers must have TOEFL or IELTS or SAT I Verbal scores. The minimum TOEFL scores are: Paper-based: 550; Computer-based: 213; Internet-based: 80. IELTS score is: 6.5, with no individual bands below 5.0; SAT I Verbal minimum score of 500.
