Course summary

For a limited number of qualified students, the department offers an accelerated five-year program leading to a BA in sociology and an MS in social research. The program requires a total of 145 credits of college work (100 undergraduate, 45 graduates), one semester of supervised field experience, and a research paper. In order to be admitted to the program, students must complete their basic requirements, pass an honors course (independent study or honors seminar), and meet the requirements of the MS program as outlined in the graduate catalog. Undergraduate students are typically admitted to the program toward the end of their junior year and begin their graduate work at the beginning of their senior year. Interested students should consult the program’s adviser at the earliest possible date.

Entry requirement for international students

Students will be considered on the basis of overall strength of academic preparation; grades in individual subjects; overall high school average; and SAT or ACT scores. Applicants who have taken the General Equivalency Diploma (GED) examination must submit test scores and can be eligible provided they have taken the required academic units in high school. The college recommends four years of English, four years of social studies, three years of mathematics, two years of a foreign language, two years of laboratory sciences, and one year of performing or visual arts as the academic preparation needed for success in college. International applicants whose primary language is not English must demonstrate a firm command of the English language by scoring a minimum of 500 on the TOEFL.
