Course summary
This program provides students with a comprehensive critical framework through which they can understand the important aesthetic theories and practices of 20th Century visual culture. Through lectures, discussions, and writing assignments, students gain an advanced understanding of the dominant cultural and aesthetic concerns of the present period, as well as the necessary theoretical tools to support their own studio or design practices.
Program modules
Modules include: 150: Visual Culture and Literacy, 250: Visual Culture and Literacy II, 350: Art Theory and Criticism, 371: Art in the Public Realm: Contemporary Issues, 450: Senior Seminar, 140x: A Cultural Guide to Los Angeles.
Entry requirement for international students
Applicants should have GPA of 3.5 in the major and an overall GPA of 3.3. They should have TOEFL scores of 600 or more in paper-based test, 250 in computer-based test or 100 in Internet-based TOEFL (IBT) with not less than 20 (out of 30) in listening, reading, writing, and speaking components. Students need to have a score of 600 or more in Critical Reading section of the SAT.
