Course summary
This program is designed to prepare the department's students to teach with cultural awareness, adaptability and relevance when planning instruction for adolescents. Its first commitment is to prepare future teacher professionals of quality so that they can reach every adolescent. Second, its program is designed to give the students the knowledge about English language, and literature as well as the pedagogical theory and philosophy that emphasizes quality, relevance, and cultural awareness. This involves taking courses in writing, oral language, a wide range of literature in various genres, and knowledge about creating effective learning environments for adolescents. Completing the program will make each student eligible for certification as a secondary school English teacher in the state of Delaware. If the student is interested in teaching in other states than Delaware, this program will provide the necessary basic courses, but individual states may require an additional course or courses.

The modules are ENGL 101 Tools of Textual Analysis, ENGL 102 Texts in Times, ENGL 204 American Literature, ENGL 205 British Literature to 1660, ENGL 206 British Literature 1660-Present, ENGL 324 Shakespeare, ENGL 294 English Language: Grammar and Usage, ENGL 394 English Language: Rhetorical and Cultural Contexts, ENGL 376 World Literature, EDUC 413 Adolescent Development and Educational Psychology, EDUC 414 Teaching Exceptional Adolescents, EDUC 419 Diversity in Secondary Education, EDUC 400 Student Teaching, EDUC 420 Reading in the Content Area, ENGL 482 Seminar in Teaching English I, ENGL 483 Seminar in Teaching English II, EDUC 481 Teaching English in Secondary School.
Entry requirement for international students
Students must have transcripts of all secondary and post-secondary work, a minimum score of 80 (TOEFL ibt), 550 (paper), or 213 (computer) in TOEFL (for international students from non-English speaking country) or 6.5 or better in IELTS, applicants to the Nursing major must have a minimum TOEFL score of 100 (TOEFL ibt), 600 (paper), or 250 (computer).
