Course summary
This program is intended for students interested in incorporating the study of music into wide-ranging liberal studies coursework. The program emphasizes studies in the liberal arts and prepares students for a wide range of careers.
Program modules
The modules are APPLIED LESSONS (48 quarter hours): Private instruction on their instrument, MUSICIANSHIP STUDIES (42 quarter hours): Musicianship I-VI (MUS 110, 120, 130, 210, 220,230): Music History and Theory, Aural Training I-VI (MUS 111, 121, 131, 211, 221, 231), Group Piano I-VI (MUS 113, 123, 133, 213, 223, 233), Musical Traditions of America and the World (MUS 265), Basic Conducting and Basic Conducting Practicum (MUS 304 and 303), ENSEMBLES (9 quarters): Large Ensembles (6 quarters): Students must enroll in at least 1 large ensemble every quarter during the first two years of study. Large or Small Ensembles (3 quarters): Students must enroll in at least 1 large or small ensemble every quarter during the 3rd or 4th year of study. ELECTIVES (21 quarter hours): Music Electives: A minimum of 9 quarter hours, Free Electives: A minimum of 12 quarter hours, LIBERAL STUDIES CORE (28 quarter hours): Discover or Explore Chicago (LSP 102 or 103), Composition and Rhetoric I and II (ENG 103 and 104), Mathematical and Technological Literacy (LSP 120 or IT 121), Sophomore Seminar (LSP 200), Junior Experiential Learning, Senior Year Capstone, LIBERAL STUDIES LEARNING DOMAINS (52 quarter hours): Arts and Literature (2 courses from different departments other than music), Philosophical Inquiry (2 courses), Religious Dimensions (2 courses, Scientific Inquiry (3 courses), Self, Society and the Modern World (2 courses), Understanding the Past (2 courses from different geographic regions).
Entry requirement for international students
Applicants should have completed or are about to complete their secondary school education (high school) and have not taken any college or university coursework after finishing their secondary education. Applicants educated outside the US, regardless of their legal status, should have a proof of English proficiency. Applicants can prove their English proficiency by submitting any of the tests below: minimum TOEFL score of 80, no section lower than 17 (internet based), 213 (computer-based) or 550 (paper based); minimum IELTS score of 6.5; minimum SAT verbal score of 500; minimum ACT score of 18 on the reading section, and 20 on the English section and a minimum Pearson Test of English Academic score of 53.
