Course summary

This is a professional program within a traditional academic framework, which includes intensive technique training along with choreographic and performance opportunities through individual mentoring. Graduates of this program have the foundation in dance skills and knowledge required for employment at a professional level and have advanced technique/performance skills in ballet and modern dance. They have the ability to analyze, synthesize and communicate ideas and concepts in dance and have the ability to choreograph, produce and manage a concert.

The modules include DAN 100 Ballet, DAN 110 Modern Dance, DAN 130 Conditioning for Dance, DAN 170 Dance Improvisation/Choreography I, DAN 240 Dance Production, DAN 270 Choreography II, DAN 330 Kinesiology for the Dancer, DAN 350 Creative Dance for Children, DAN 380 Contemporary Dance History; Revol/Revisionism, DAN 425 Issues and Trends in Dance, DAN 428 Opportunities and Careers in Dance, DAN 441 Dance Pedagogy, MUT 109 Basic Musicianship for Dancers.

Entry requirement for international students

Candidates for admission to undergraduate degree programs should have completed high school-level college preparatory work or otherwise demonstrate sufficient academic preparation to begin college work. Normally, high school courses should include, as a minimum, four years of English, three years of mathematics, three years of natural sciences, three years of social sciences and two years of a foreign language. Consideration for admission is based upon an applicant’s academic background, including high school academic achievement, educational goals and potential for success at Oakland University. Students applying as freshmen must submit scores from the American College Test (ACT). Students should have a TOEFL score of 550 minimum on paper-based, 213 minimum on computer-based and 79 minimum on internet-based. The minimum MELAB score of 77 is required.
