Course summary
This second degree program is designed for students who already have a bachelor's degree in a field other than nursing and wish to pursue professional nursing as a career. The objective of the program is to produce graduates for professional nursing practice who can utilize knowledge from the natural and behavioral sciences as well as humanities and nursing theory to critically analyze and synthesize responses to health problems and provide appropriate nursing interventions. Graduates of this program will leave the program with the knowledge, skills, and practical experience needed to demonstrate nursing practice that is based on ethical, legal, and professional values and standards of practice. Students will learn to utilize the nursing process to support and promote health in diverse individuals, families, groups and communities in a multicultural world. The goal is to demonstrate continued commitment to lifelong learning to promote personal and professional growth. Courses will consist of lecture, ‘hands-on’ in-house lab experiences with high fidelity ‘state of the art’ manikins, as well as extensive clinical experiences in top-rated clinical facilities. Some courses are conducted via distance education and students must have access to the appropriate technology.
Entry requirement for international students
Students must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale and 3.0 in the last 30 credits. They must have completed designated prerequisite coursework with grades of C or better and a minimum course average of 3.0, to include the following: 6-8 semester hours Human Anatomy and Physiology, 3-4 semester hours Microbiology, 3 semester hours Statistics, 3 semester hours Nutrition and 3 semester hours Ethics. They should also have completed the following courses in their previous baccalaureate degree: 6 semester hours English Composition, 3 semester hours Math, 12 semester hours Humanities/Social Sciences and 12 semester hours Natural Sciences (usually fulfilled by anatomy, physiology, and microbiology). Coursework in developmental psychology and general chemistry is also recommended. Students who have been previously enrolled in another nursing program (diploma, associate, or baccalaureate) without earning an RN license are required to submit a letter from that school on its letter head stating that the applicant left the program in good standing. International students must have official test scores for either Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS). The TOEFL/IELTS requirement may be waived for applicants who hold a degree from an accredited college or university located in a country in which English is the official language and also the language of instruction at the institution.
