Course summary
This Program provides an understanding of art as a humanistic discipline developing formal and conceptual skills that helps lead students to careers in the Arts. Students may specialize in Fine Arts, Graphic Design, Digital Arts or Art History, Theses concentrations consist of sixteen courses earning 48 credits: a required group of foundation courses, an area of emphasis, and a senior thesis. The emphasis is worked out in consultation with an adviser, and is intended to provide development of ideas and skills in a particular area. During the senior year, students in Fine Art, Digital Art and Graphic Design create a series of projects that are shown in a Senior exhibition at the Campus Gallery. Entry requirement for international students
Students must have earned the equivalent of a U.S. high school diploma with required GPA. Regardless of US residency status, an English proficiency examination is required of all students whose secondary schooling has been outside the US in a country where English is not the principal language. Students who have achieved a grade of B or better in a college-level English Composition course in residence at an accredited US college are exempt from this requirement. English courses that are designated ESL, non-native, or which require a special support component, as well as courses taken outside the US, is not acceptable. A score of 6 or higher is acceptable for our Newark campus in IELTS. Acceptable scores for all schools except the College of Nursing are 550+ on the paper and pencil test or 79+ on the Internet-based test. For College of Nursing applicants, the acceptable scores are 600+ on the paper and pencil test or 100+ on the Internet-based test. For admission, all applicants must prepare and present a portfolio and a type written statement describing who they are, their experiences in art and life, and their artistic and academic goals for evaluation. at the Rutgers-Newark.For high school students, portfolios should include a minimum of 10 unframed pieces of original artwork, sketchbooks, and/or journals. For transfer students from two- and four- year institutions, portfolios should include work from their college level art and design classes. Their portfolio should demonstrate energy, intelligence, an understanding of composition, and a variety of media, sizes, and styles. Slides of 3-dimensional work are acceptable.
