Kendall was incorporated in 1928 by a provision in the will of Helen M. Kendall, the second wife of nationally known Grand Rapids furniture designer David Wolcott Kendall. Mrs. Kendall established the David Wolcott Kendall School of Art as a memorial to her husband, to reflect their strong belief in the fundamental principles of art, and to offer encouragement to aspiring artists, as David Kendall had done throughout his life. The school opened its door on March 1, 1931, with a total enrollment of 35 art students.

The University provides five on-campus dining facilities, one of which is the award-winning, race car-themed Mascar Grille. Mascar was created with help from out Automotive department and alumni, including the publisher of the magazine Inside NASCAR. Ferris State University offers a number of residence hall options to accommodate student’s preferences. All Ferris residence halls are completely smoke free. All rooms have connections for 100 MB Internet and cable television. A phone with voicemail is also included in each room. Each floor in all halls is equipped with laundry facilities as well as a small kitchenette.
