Course summary

The undergraduate music program offers courses and performance opportunities for all Rutgers students, in all types of music. Many students choose to major, double-major or minor in music. This faculty includes internationally recognized artists and scholars in jazz and classical music. Courses include music appreciation, fundamentals, the history of classical music, Beethoven, Bach, jazz appreciation, rock, music from other cultures, women in music, and others. Any Rutgers student may earn course credit by singing in the chorus, playing in the jazz ensemble, percussion ensemble, or chamber music ensemble, and by taking private lessons. Private lessons are available on voice and on virtually every instrument, for classical music and for jazz. Students may take advantage of the exceptional music resources at Rutgers-Newark. In Bradley Hall we are working on equipping a music laboratory with synthesizers and software for composition, notation, or the basics of music. The equipment may be used by students interested in advanced projects. Bradley Hall is also equipped with practice rooms and pianos, an organ, a recital hall, and a collection of instruments which students may use in the building during ensembles.

Program modules

Students will have their courses in Introduction to Music, Music Theory I, Music Theory II , Applied Musicianship, Music Theory III, Music Theory IV, Survey of Western Music , Jazz, World Music, Applied music. Students majoring in music must enroll each term in a departmental ensemble chorus or band. Applied Music. All students majoring in music are expected to study an instrument or voice each term. A secondary instrument, or voice, also is urged. Music Ensembles. Membership in an instrumental ensemble (jazz, chamber music) or chorus is required each term: 21&62:700: 231, 232, 233, 334, 357, 358, 359, 360 Rutgers University Chorus 21&62:701: 255, 256, 355, 356, 455, 456 Instrumental Ensemble I, II, III.

Entry requirement for international students

Students must have earned the equivalent of a U.S. high school diploma with required GPA. Regardless of US residency status, an English proficiency examination is required of all students whose secondary schooling has been outside the US in a country where English is not the principal language. Students who have achieved a grade of B or better in a college-level English Composition course in residence at an accredited US college are exempt from this requirement. English courses that are designated ESL, non-native, or which require a special support component, as well as courses taken outside the US, is not acceptable. A score of 6 or higher is acceptable for our Newark campus in IELTS. Acceptable scores for all schools except the College of Nursing are 550+ on the paper and pencil test or 79+ on the Internet-based test. For College of Nursing applicants, the acceptable scores are 600+ on the paper and pencil test or 100+ on the Internet-based test. For admission, all applicants must prepare and present a portfolio and a type written statement describing who they are, their experiences in art and life, and their artistic and academic goals for evaluation. at the Rutgers-Newark.For high school students, portfolios should include a minimum of 10 unframed pieces of original artwork, sketchbooks, and/or journals. For transfer students from two- and four- year institutions, portfolios should include work from their college level art and design classes. Their portfolio should demonstrate energy, intelligence, an understanding of composition, and a variety of media, sizes, and styles. Slides of 3-dimensional work are acceptable.
