Course summary
The Bachelor of Independent Studies in Asian Studies is designed to provide a firm foundation in this region of area studies for students wishing to pursue a graduate degree in the area or desiring to understand Asia more thoroughly. Professions in which a specialization in Asian Studies is an asset include business, law, education, and government service. As a rapidly developing region of the world, Asia holds great potential as a job growth area for specialists.
Program modules
The modules include AL 3031 Language in Society, GEOG 4404 Geography of East Asia, GEOG 4406 Advanced Regional Geography (only when China), HIST 4228 Asians in America to 1965, HIST 4700 China and Japan to 1600, HIST 4710 China and Japan since 1600, HIST 4800 South Asia to 1757, HIST 4810 South Asia since 1757, HIST 4890 Topics in World Hist: Pacific Islands and Ocean, PHIL 4610 Hinduism, PHIL 4615 Buddhism, PHIL 4620 Confucianism and Taoism, PHIL 4625 Zen and Shinto, POLS 4255 Political Economy of East Asia, POLS 4256 Political Economy of Japan, POLS 4258 Government and Politics in South Asia.
Entry requirement for international students
Admission to Georgia State University is a selective process and meeting minimum admission requirements does not guarantee acceptance. All of the following minimum requirements must be met in order for an applicant to receive consideration as a freshman: Be a graduate of and have a college preparatory diploma from a high school accredited by a regional accrediting association (such as the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools), a high school accredited by the Georgia, Accrediting Commission, or a public high school regulated by a school system and state Department of Education. A Certificate of Attendance does not qualify a student for admission consideration. In addition students must have a minimum 2.80 high school grade point average calculated on the 16 courses listed above. Submit electronic SAT scores (including the writing section) with a minimum combined score of 900 with at least 430 verbal/critical reading and 400 mathematics or electronic ACT scores (including the Writing Test) with a minimum composite score of 19 with at least 17 English and 17 mathematics. Although not currently required (with the exception of home-schooled applicants), applicants are encouraged to submit SAT Subject Test scores of their choice. Permanent Undergraduate Admissions 29 residents, educated in the United States, whose native language is not English are encouraged to take the TOEFL. If the TOEFL is not taken, applicants from local areas will be required to take the Georgia State Test of English Proficiency (GSTEP) to determine appropriate admission. Have a freshman index (FI) of 2500 or higher.
