The Department of Biological is housed primarily in Montgomery Hall, a 112,000-square-foot facility adjacent to the campus' east lagoon. In addition to numerous teaching and research laboratories, the department maintains a variety of central facilities including live animal quarters, greenhouses, confocal and electron microscopy, controlled environment, molecular core services (neucleic acid sequencing and synthesis), X-ray and radioisotope laboratories, graphic design assistance, shop services, central stores, and information systems.

Accommodation details

The majority of rooms at NIU are traditional double rooms. There are also a limited number of single rooms, triples, and suites. Most residents share a double room with one roommate on a coed floor. Residence halls have no curfew; visitation is restricted only on designated floors. All residence halls are smoke free. Coed floors offer alternating rooms for males and females to encourage interaction. Coed living is offered only on floors with separate bath facilities for each gender. Alcohol-free floors prohibit alcohol possession or use by students or their guests regardless of age. Students under 21 are not allowed to have alcoholic beverages anywhere on NIU Campus. All students living in the residence halls are required to have a meal plan. Students may select from gold, platinum or titanium meal plans. The gold Meal Plan has a value of $60 per week. Platinum Meal Plan has a value of $90 per week. Titanium Meal Plan has a value of $110 per week. Room and board rates are calculated by determining the assigned room type and meal plan.
