Course summary
The Information Systems program is designed to prepare students for computer-related careers in business and government. Students are taught the professional skills of a programmer/analyst such as systems development methods, programming languages, and data base processing. Additional topics covered include client/server systems, decision support systems, data mining, e-commerce, computer and data security, project management, and information systems management. Graduates of the IS program will have a good understanding of both business operations and computer-based information systems. They are qualified for a wide range of positions requiring this combination of knowledge.
Program modules
The following are the modules: Major (36): IS 250, 251 (or other programming course), 350, 351, 443, 451 (or other networking course with consent of the adviser). Electives: 18 credits , 9 to 18 credits of IS electives. (IS 301 may not be used as an elective) , 0 to 9 credits from the Computer Science / Computer Networking and Applications or related program, selected with prior approval of the IS major adviser. A maximum of 3 credits of IS 344 or 444 can count toward the 18 major elective credits.
Entry requirement for international students
Applicants must have four years of English including composition and literature, three years of social studies including one year each of U.S. history and geography, three years of math including two years of algebra and one of geometry, two years of the same world language, one year in an area of the arts, three years of science including one year of each of a biological and physical science and one year laboratory experience. International applicants must satisfy one of the following requirements: meet the score of 61 on the internet-based TOEFL (iBT) or 500 for the Institutional (paper) TOEFL or 500 standard on International (paper) Test Of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Apart from this they must also have 5.5 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), 70 on Michigan, SAT critical reading score of 370, graduation from an English-medium high school with a 2.5 (cumulative equivalent) GPA or higher.
