Course summary

This program objective is to educate students to pursue a productive career; provide the necessary background for students to successfully pursue advanced study at LSU or elsewhere.

Entry requirement for international students

Students must have completed 18 units of college-preparatory classes and achieved a minimum GPA of 3.0. In addition, they must have a minimum SAT score of 1030 (critical reading and math) or a composite ACT score of at least 22. An applicant whose native language is not English and/or who has been educated outside of the U.S. in a country or province where English is not the only official language must demonstrate proof of English proficiency by submitting either TOEFL or an IELTS score. On the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), the following minimum scores are required for automatic admission: 550 (paper-based exam), 213 (computer-based exam), 79 (internet-based exam). On the IELTS (International English Language Testing Service), the following minimum score is required for automatic admission: 6.5. Applicants may be exempt from the TOEFL / IELTS requirement if they have completed one of the following: a U.S. high school diploma earned, having attended all 4 years of high school in the U.S.; a bachelor’s degree earned from an accredited U.S. institution; a score of 480 on the English/Critical Reading section of the SAT, or 20 on the English Section of the ACT; U.S. transfer requirements (minimum 2.50 overall GPA on 30 or more semester hours above remedial level, including a college-level course in English and in mathematics, or two consecutive English courses, from a regionally accredited U.S. college or university).

This Department offers programs of study leading to the MS and PhD degrees. Areas of study include computers (computer architectures, parallel and distributed computing, compilers, embedded systems, reconfigurable computing, computer vision, optical networks, and fault tolerant computing); electronics (device-oriented electronics, solid-state materials, nanotechnology and VLSI circuits and systems design); communication systems (digital communication, computer communication, data compression, wireless communication and digital signal processing, image processing); control systems (robust, adaptive, and fault-tolerant control); and electric power (power systems and power electronics). An interdisciplinary concentration in information technology is also available.

LSU has 17 residence halls with architectural styles ranging from a Renaissance style typical of the new Residential College Complex and the older core of the campus, to the modern style typical of the halls along Campus Lake. Residence hall rooms can generally be described in one of two ways. Traditional rooms, most common among the older halls, are usually large with high ceilings and free-standing furniture that student can arrange as they desire. All rooms are air-conditioned with window units in each room. Modern rooms, common in newer halls with central air-conditioning, are more compact but maximize living space by using built-in furniture. Smoking is not permitted in rooms or any other areas in the residence halls. East and West Campus Apartments provide state-of-the-art accommodations, including private rooms with telephone service, basic cable TV, in room data connections, washer/dryer combinations, and full size kitchens with microwave ovens and garbage disposals. Each apartment has attractively furnished living rooms, bedrooms, and dining areas. In the Power Activity Building students will find additional study space, activities, programs, a TV lounge, email work stations, and professional and student staff to provide assistance as needed.
