Course summary
The Department of Civil, Architectural, and Environmental Engineering offers a unique program whereby students receive a baccalaureate degree and a Master of Science (MSAE or MSCE) degree in five years. Special conditions exist, which are as follows: The student must declare his/her intent to participate before the end of the junior year by submitting an official application to the department graduate committee for admission into the graduate degree portion of the program. Exceptions to this rule must be approved by the department faculty; A student wishing to drop out of the five-year program without the graduate degree must complete all requirements for the undergraduate degree program, including the CAE 403/404 Senior Design Project I and II, in order to be awarded his/her undergraduate degree; To qualify for the graduate degree, the student must meet all of the pertinent Graduate School requirements, including an acceptable score on the GRE (Graduate Record Examination) and a minimum of 3.0 GPA in the 30 credits applied toward the graduate degree; All students must take the GRE and show satisfactory scores before the beginning of the fifth year; Before being advised for the beginning of the fifth year, the student and the CAE Graduate Advisor will form an Advisory Committee on behalf of the student upon consultation with the faculty; After satisfactorily completing at least 12 credits of the MSCE degree, the student will apply for Admission to Candidacy for the Master's Degree, which will be sent to the Graduate School; The student is awarded both the undergraduate and graduate degrees at the end of the fifth year when all requirements are satisfied.
Entry requirement for international students
GRE General Test. Scores on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or comparable evidence of competency in English is required of international applicants whose native language is not English. The admission policy for the Department includes a minimum GPA of 3.0, minimum GRE of 1000 (verbal plus quantitative), and minimum TOEFL of 550 for the paper-based test and 213 for the computer based test. Students who hold a bachelor's degree in a field other than civil, architectural, and environmental engineering may be admitted to the graduate program upon completion of appropriate deficiency courses, in addition to the regular requirements for the graduate degree.
