The University of Massachusetts has several residential complexes and a variety of living arrangements, including apartment-style living in the newest complex. Other residence halls are designed primarily for sophomores, juniors and seniors. There are a variety of room configurations, from the traditional double-corridor style to a suite-like design. Most rooms for freshmen are doubles. All residence areas offer laundries, mailboxes, lounges for group gatherings, areas for study groups, etc. Near the residence halls are spots for recreation such as tennis and basketball courts. Resident students have their own dining hall, and freshmen purchase one of several meal plans offered. If students live on campus, students will join 4200 other students making the most of their college experience: enjoying new independence; getting to know a variety of people; making their own decisions. Freshmen live in the "freshmen quad," in one of the residence halls designated exclusively for them. There are special programs to guide students through the first year, with both professional staff and student resident assistants (RAs) to help with questions and problems.
