Course summary
This program is intended for educators who want to attain the highest degree in education, while retaining a focus on classroom practice. The degree program is characterized by a strong theoretical base and a comprehensive perspective on the nature of schools, education in a democracy, and effective teaching and learning. The program will aim to prepare students from the U.S. and abroad who already have the equivalent of a Masters Degree in philosophy or Philosophy for Children with the necessary courses and research to enable them to assume leadership positions in education in their country. Students working in this specialization will engage in intensive study of the various domains of pedagogy and critical analysis of the theory and practice of Philosophy for Children. Students will also explore related fields such as cognitive science, educational psychology, linguistics, critical sociology, and traditional and international domains of Philosophy as they bear on Philosophy for Children. All courses will be taught using the Community of Inquiry approach and students will reflect on the philosophical and pedagogical foundations of this community of inquiry methodology.

Entry requirement for international students
Students wishing to matriculate in this area must have completed a bachelor’s degree. Graduate students must demonstrate communication skills that will not interfere with clinical practice. A student who is judged to have questionable skills will be referred to a faculty panel for further evaluation. If necessary the student will be referred for assistance. Students requiring assistance will be reevaluated before they are allowed to enroll for clinical practice. Enrollment in clinical practice will be postponed until communication skills are judged to be sufficient. Student must complete GRE, GMAT, and TOEFL are administered worldwide by Educational Testing Service (ETS). Test of English as a Foreign Language/Internet Based Test where available (TOEFL/ IBT) is required of all students whose native language is not English and whose degree was obtained in a country where English is not the official language.
