Course summary
This program focuses on performing fundamental research in mechanical engineering, culminating with a Ph.D. dissertation. It aims to train engineering scientists who will devote their professional careers to the development of fundamental knowledge and technology from which applications will emerge. These engineering scientists will fill research positions in government and industrial laboratories as well as teaching and research positions in universities. Talented and highly motivated students who wish to pursue a research career are encouraged to pursue the Ph.D. degree directly after obtaining the B.S. degree. The design, manufacturing, and engineering systems (DMES) area encompasses the study of design, computer-aided design, mechatronics, design for manufacturing, manufacturing processes, computer-aided manufacturing, control systems, robotics, electro-mechanical systems, manufacturing systems, production systems, dynamics and vibrations of mechanical systems, and optimization.
Entry requirement for international students
Students must have a bachelor’s degree in mechanical, aerospace, civil, industrial or chemical engineering with an overall GPA of 3.3 on the 4 point system. Students with undergraduate backgrounds in electrical engineering, physics, mathematics or chemistry may enter the program contingent upon fulfilling a minimum number of undergraduate prerequisites to be determined upon an examination of their credentials. They should have obtained GRE scores of 1350 (quantitative + verbal) and a minimum 4.0 on 6.0 (analytical writing). International students must have a minimum TOEFL score of 250 on computer-based test.
