Course summary
The program in ethnomusicology offers rigorous training in the intellectual history of the field, theory, fieldwork, ethnography, transcription, and area studies. Our ethnomusicology students not only benefit from collaboration with the faculty and students in musicology and composition, but they build an important interdisciplinary underpinning to their studies with required courses in performance studies, anthropology, critical theory, and cultural studies.

Entry requirement for international students
Students with U.S. bachelors degrees or equivalent degrees from institutions of recognized standing in other countries may apply for admission to Graduate Studies. Assessment of a foreign degree is based on the characteristics of the national system of education, the type of institution attended, and the level of studies completed. Graduate Studies requires the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) if native language is not English or instruction has not been in English. The minimum score required for admission to graduate study at UC Davis is 550 for the paper test, 213 for the computer-based test, and 68 for the Internet-based test and IELTS overall BAND score must be at least 7 on a 9-point scale.
