UNC Charlotte is one of a generation of universities founded in metropolitan areas of the United States immediately after World War II in response to rising education demands generated by the war and its technology. The university comprises seven professional colleges and currently offers 18 doctoral programs, 62 master’s degree programs and 90 bachelor’s degrees. More than 900 full-time faculties comprise the university’s academic departments and the 2007 fall enrollment exceeded 22,300 students. UNC Charlotte boasts more than 75,000 living alumni and adds 4,000 to 4,500 new alumni each year. UNC Charlotte is organized into five administrative divisions: Academic Affairs, Business Affairs, Development and Alumni Affairs, Student Affairs, and University Relations and Community Affairs.

This university provides housing for international students through four basic styles of living arrangements: traditional residence hall living (also called as high-rise style), suite style living, and apartment style living, Greek style living (restrictions apply). Housing and Residence Life's Facility Services Department offers various services that include: appliance rentals (micro-fridge and mini-fridge), conference services and university guest and intern housing, housekeeping services - for common areas (such as hallways and high-rise bathrooms), HVAC / heating and air conditioning services, locksmith and loan key services, maintenance services, pest control, plumbing services, project management. High-speed Internet service is provided to each resident by TimeWarner's Road Runner service. Students are strongly encouraged to install anti-virus and anti-spyware software as well as a firewall before coming to campus. Many of these software programs are provided free of charge by the University. Each residential area has washers and dryers for the use of residents. Students can use money deposited on their 49er Card in the laundry. There are no change machines in the Residence Halls so students should come with their own supply of quarters. Local telephone service is provided in each room as part of the fee for residential services in university's high-rise, suite, and apartment buildings. The university's Housing Technology Services (HTS) team is responsible for developing, managing, and delivering the technology solutions used throughout the Department of Housing and Residence Life.
