The School of Social Work was established in 1965 by the Alabama Legislature, and the School’s first dean was appointed the following year. The M.S.W. Program was first accredited in 1969, and the first class received master’s degrees the same year. The M.S.W. program was reaccredited in 2003 for the maximum period of eight years. The doctoral program began as a Doctor of Social Work (DSW) program in 1975 to prepare teachers and researchers for the social work profession. Over the years, recognizing the need for increased emphasis on research within the profession, the faculty substantially revised the program. As of 1992, the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) has been conferred. The doctoral program is affiliated with the Group for the Advancement of Doctoral Education (GADE) in social work.

Residents of campus housing have access to many resources, including various services and facilities located in and near the residence halls. These include access to: Resnet, Computer Labs, Telecom and Bama Dining locations. Residence Hall Association Bryce Lawn is an upperclassmen apartment community located on Bryce Lawn Drive between Campus and University. Each apartment features three single bedrooms. Each bedroom is furnished with a twin bed, desk, and dresser. The three residents share one full bathroom and a half bath that contains a sink and shower. The living room is furnished with a sofa and chair. The kitchen is equipped with a refrigerator, electric stove, dishwasher, washer, dryer, and kitchen table with chairs. The Highlands feature furnished apartments with four students sharing a living/dining room area, kitchen, 3 bathrooms (with 1 shower, 1 bathtub/shower, 2 toilets and 3 sinks) and three bedrooms. The large bedroom is a double bedroom and the two smaller bedrooms are singles. The layout of handicapped-accessible apartments varies in the lakeside residence halls Each private room is furnished with a 3 drawer chest, a split pedestal desk, an upholstered two- position desk chair, and a junior loft bed.
