Course summary
This program is designed to prepare future teachers for urban classrooms, particularly in Chicago Public Schools and leads to initial teaching certification in Chemistry, English, History and Physics (State of Illinois, grades 6-12); and initial certification in French, German and Spanish (State of Illinois, grades K-12). Students are required to complete a minimum of 34 semester hours of course credit of which at least 9 hours must be at the 500 level.
Program modules
The courses includes Policy Issues in the History of American Education, Advanced Educational Psychology, Curriculum, Instruction and Evaluation in Education, Practicum in Secondary Classrooms, Survey of Characteristics of Learners with Disabilities, Advanced Middle and High School Literacy, Colloquium on Diversity in Educational Practice and Instruction and Evaluation in Secondary Education.
Entry requirement for international students
Students must have a baccalaureate degree or equivalent from an accredited institution with a minimum grade point average of 3.0 on a 5.0 scale for the final 60 semester hours of undergraduate work and all post-baccalaureate credit, GRE general test score of combined verbal and quantitative, writing sample, letters of recommendation and personal statement. For international students, TOEFL score of 550 (paper-based) is required.
