Course summary
The M.S. degree provides course work with an emphasis in genetics, cell biology, molecular biology, ecology, animal behavior, systematics, biogeography, botany, entomology, herpetology, and ornithology. Each candidate for the M.S. degree in biology must complete: minimum of 30 semester hours of graduate credit including six hours thesis (BIOL 5395, BIOL 5396); core curriculum (required): Evolutionary Genetics, Phylogenetic Systematics, Univariate Statistical Methods in Biology, and Multivariate Statistical Methods in Biology; Only 6 hours of undergraduate courses taken for graduate credit may apply to the M.S. degree (BIOL 4661 Field Biology; CHEM 4334 Biochemistry; CHEM 4135 Biochemistry Laboratory).

Entry requirement for international students
Admission Requirements: The equivalent of bachelor’s degree in science with a major in biology from the University of Texas at Tyler. A student should examine carefully the requirements for the undergraduate major in biology from UT Tyler. Differences in course work between the student’s major (e.g., biology, wildlife science, environmental biology, etc.) will be determined by the Department. A student may be advised to complete selected courses (with a grade of B or better) to obtain equivalency to a major in biology at UT Tyler; satisfactory score on the General Test (verbal, quantitative, and analytical writing) of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). GRE Verbal + GRE Quantitative + GPA × 100 ≥ 1300. Analytical writing ≥4.0. Students who do not have satisfactory scores on the Graduate Record Examination may be admitted under the condition that they obtain a grade of "B" or higher on a prescribed set of undergraduate and/or graduate courses that are approved by the department. Satisfactory grade point average on all prior advanced (junior, senior, and graduate) work taken.
