Program modules
There are two options: In Plan A students enroll in a minimum of 10 courses (3 units each). However, 3 of these courses (9 units) are used towards a MS thesis involving a research project, which is guided by a selected faculty member. The comprehensive examination (see below) is not required for Plan A students. The CEE department encourages students to take the Plan A option: we believe that the research experience is invaluable. In Plan B,students enroll in a minimum of 10 courses (3 units each). Of these 10 courses, 6 must be graduate-level civil engineering and/or environmental engineering courses. The other four courses must be 500-level or higher, and may be from other departments (with the permission of the graduate advisor). During the final semester, each student must pass a thorough comprehensive examination in order to graduate.
Entry requirement for international students
Students should hold an acceptable baccalaureate degree earned at an institution accredited by a regional accrediting association, or have completed equivalent academic preparation as determined by the graduate dean. They should have attained a grade point average of at least 2.85 in an acceptable earned baccalaureate degree, or at least 2.85 in the last 60 semester (90 quarter) units attempted, or hold an acceptable post-baccalaureate degree earned at an institution accredited by a regional accrediting association. They should also have been in good standing at the last institution attended. In addition to this, international students should have obtained a minimum TOEFL score of 550 or higher (using the paper version) or 213 or higher (using the computer version) or 80 or higher (using the internet version). Students must also obtain a score of 6.5 or better on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).
