Course summary

This program is designed to promote innovation, experimentation, and conceptual rigor in writing and the arts. This program provides opportunities for writers in digital technologies, multimedia, collaborative projects, performance, community arts, hybrid and mixed genres, as well as poetry and fiction. Distinguished as one of the only interdisciplinary writing programs in the country, they provide a rich space for mixed genre and new media approaches to writing, community service, alternative modes of publishing, editing both print and on-line journals, and interacting with successful writers and artists.

CRTW 522-529 Writing Workshop, LITR526 Studies in African-American Literature to 1945 (3 hrs), LITR566 Studies in 20th-Century British Fiction (3 hrs), LITR567 Studies in 20th-Century Irish Literature (3 hrs), LITR576 Studies in 20th-Century American Fiction (3 hrs), LITR580 Studies in Contemporary Literary Trends (3 hrs).

Entry requirement for international students

Applicants should have completed a four-year bachelor’s degree from a ministry of education recognized or accredited institution. International students should have obtained a TOEFL score of 213 (CBT), 550 (PBT), 79 (iBT); or MELAB score of 77; or IELTS score of 6.5; or TWE score of 4.

The Department of English Language and Literature is the largest academic department at Eastern Michigan University, with more than fifty tenured and tenure-track faculty members and more than fifty lecturers and graduate teaching assistants. This department is made up of dedicated teacher/scholars who have specializations in the fields of children's literature, composition and rhetoric, linguistics, literature, creative writing, technical and professional writing, English education, journalism, and public relations. Besides serving the EMU community with a variety of general studies courses, this department offers 9 undergraduate majors, 8 undergraduate minors, and 6 graduate programs of study. Faculty and students within the department are involved in a variety of nationally and internationally recognized publications and projects.

Eastern Michigan University offers traditional residence halls as well as apartment living options for students. Three apartment complexes are available to serve their housing needs. These include Brown/Munson, Cornell Courts and West view apartments. University Apartments include locations convenient to classes, the library and athletic events, utilities included in rent (gas, electric, water and trash collection), basic cable service, laundry rooms in each building, AC’s can be installed, storage facilities at some locations, community rooms for complex activities. Eastern Michigan offers on-campus living options for graduate students in residence halls and University Apartments. Graduate students selecting on-campus living have the choice of living in a single room in either Hill or Hoyt, which are close to food options, the Student Center and the University Library. This university offers residence halls are buell hall, downing hall, and wise hall.
