Course summary
The program in African American studies is designed to provide students with a sound understanding of the black experience nationally and internationally, while focusing on North America. The interdepartmental and inter-disciplinary features of the program allow for a broad and varied exposure to black culture, economics, politics, and history from Africa to the Americas.

Entry requirement for international students
Students applying for this course must have copies of high school or secondary school documents stamped "attested as true copies" by an educational official from your school, council, or embassy/consulate. Students whose native language is not English are required to take English Language proficiency exams. An official TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or IELTS (International English Language Testing System) or MELAB (Michigan English Assessment Battery) is acceptable. Acceptable TOEFL scores are 550+ on the paper and pencil test or 79+ on the Internet-based test. Acceptable IELTS score is 7 or higher on either the academic paper and pencil test or the academic computer-based test. The minimum acceptable score is 76 for MELAB. Students are also required to take ACT or SAT exams.
