Course summary
At Alverno College the studio art major is not just business as usual. While students will receive traditional studio art training in many media, the differences between this program and other schools are significant. In the major courses they will work with other students in the areas of Art Education and Art Therapy. The studio courses are designed to assist students in making art from the perspectives of their future careers. Thus they will learn about not only studio art but how educators and therapists have differing creative concerns. Additionally, the organizing frameworks of art classes revolve around not only technical and design concerns, but focus on interpreting the components of the creative process. Students will experiment with all of these creative methods in order to better understand themselves as creative individuals. A full course of art history classes will provide them with the background necessary to the studio art field. These courses are designed to assist them in becoming a strong professional communicator in the arts. The highly active discussion and presentation methods of the classroom will allow them to develop a personal voice regarding art history and its relationships to their own art making. They will develop opinions regarding the meaning of art history and be able to articulate their ideas in public settings.
