Course summary
This program in gerontology emphasizes three main areas reflecting the field’s career options such as social policy, advocacy and direct service. It is designed to help professionals and others interested in the field to augment their credentials, while providing valuable learning experiences in the field of gerontology for those who want to pursue rewarding careers built around issues of aging and public service. The ability to identify the needs and resources of communities, to work collaboratively with them to establish goals and strategies for achieving goals, and to assess the success of these initiatives are critical skills for public and community practitioners in a wide range of roles. The planning concentration is designed to provide majors in other areas of public and community service with the foundational skills and knowledge they need to incorporate effective participatory planning skills into their practice.
Entry requirement for international students
Students should have completed four years of English, three years of college preparatory mathematics (algebra II is a minimum requirement), two years of the same foreign language, three years of science (including two with a laboratory component), two years of social science including one course in U.S. history, and two electives from the above areas, arts and humanities, or computer science. In addition, they must have a minimum TOEFL score of 550-600 on the paper test, 213-250 on the computer-based test, or 79-80 on the TOEFL IBT test, IELTS score of 6.0 or better and SAT or ACT scores are also required. Non-native speakers with a SAT-I verbal score of 400 or higher do not need to take the TOEFL.
