Course summary

The Master of Arts (M.A.) degree in School Counseling is designed for those students who desire to satisfy the academic requirements for the Professional School Counseling Certification. This degree program is available only to those individuals who satisfy the teaching experience as required by the State Board for Educator Certification (S.B.E.C.). The program is comprised of forty-two (42) graduate hours and includes a minimum of 150 practicum hours. Students completing this program and passing the TExES examination for School Counseling are eligible to be employed as a school counselor in the public, private and parochial educational setting. School Counseling students must satisfy the teaching experience requirement by the State Board for Educator Certification (S.B.E.C.) prior to entering CSL6855 Practicum School Counseling.

The major requirements are CSL6779 Counseling in Schools 3 hours, CSL6782 Theories/Methods Cnslg 3 hours, CSL6800 Counseling Assessment 3 hours, CSL6801 Life Span Development 3 hours, CSL6803 Career Cnslg/Guidance 3 hours, CSL6805 Group Counseling/Therapy 3 hours, CSL6810 Issues/Ethics: Counseling 3 hours, CSL6820 Dysfunctional Behavior 3 hours, CSL6825 Marriage & Family Therapy 3 hours, CSL6829 Pre-Practicum School Counseling 3 hours, CSL6830 Adv Cnslg Skills & Tech 3 hours, CSL6832 Multicultural Counseling 3 hours, CSL6855 Practicum School Counseling 3 hours.

Entry requirement for international students

General requirements apply to all masters’ degrees. The minimum amount of work beyond the bachelor's degree required for a master's degree is 36 semester hours excluding any prerequisite courses that may be required. All courses taken to satisfy course requirements for a master's degree must be taken at the graduate level. Twenty-four (24) semester hours applicable to the degree must be completed at Amberton University. The student must have a minimum grade point average of 3.00. No more than six (6) semester hours of credit with a grade of C may be applied toward meeting requirements for a graduate degree. A grade of D may not be applied toward a graduate degree. The student will be allowed to graduate by meeting the requirements for the degree in force at the time of initial enrollment, provided the student is within twenty-four (24) hours of graduating and completes no less than twelve (12) hours per year.
