Sociology involves the study of people interacting with others individually, in social groups, and in social systems. Anthropology is the study of people in different cultural settings. An understanding of people and society will prepare the graduate for useful employment in many vocations and professions. For non-majors, sociology and anthropology courses are excellent electives for any degree program.

Campus living is an integral part of the total educational experience at East Tennessee State University. On campus living offers a wealth of opportunities for residents to experience individual growth and development. The staff of the Department of Housing and Residence Life at East Tennessee State University welcomes the unique opportunity of providing residents with activities that increase their understanding of diversity and enhance their social and emotional well-being. There are numerous benefits which come from on-campus living. Residence hall facilities offer a variety of features to suit the individual needs. All rooms are equipped with Twin Beds, Mini Blinds, Closets, Chairs, Room Sinks, Desks, Storage Space with Drawers, Cable Television Hookup, Telephone Connection (student must supply telephone), Internet Access. Additional features available to most students include air conditioning. All halls have kitchen facilities, laundry facilities, carpeted hallways, vending machines, outside bicycle racks, and a common lounge/lobby area equipped with a color television. Living on campus offers more opportunities for students to meet people and develop friendships. When the cost for on-campus living is compared to transportation cost, deposits, and monthly rent for off-campus housing, the cost of living on campus is generally much lower. Students may also elect to pay semester rent and fees in three installments.
