Course summary

The MSTCM is a four academic year professional degree that prepares graduates to be effective, competent, and caring members of the Chinese medicine profession. The curriculum is divided into two portions: the pre-professional courses; and the graduate courses. The pre-professional courses are considered to be equivalent to the latter two upper division years of a baccalaureate program. Written and practical comprehensive examinations are given at the beginning of the sixth trimester and the ninth trimester in order to assess and determine each student’s eligibility for the next level of study and for graduation.

Entry requirement for international students

Applicants must have completed sufficient undergraduate studies (60 semester credits / 90 quarter credits, i.e. 900 hours), equivalent to at least two years of general education studies, or possess an A.A., B.A., or B.S. degree from an institution accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education. In addition to the general education requirements listed below in category A, students must complete science course co requisites listed in category B within the first year of the MSTCM program (Anatomy and Physiology must be completed before the end of the first trimester). category B courses may be offered pending faculty availability and minimum class size requirements. A. General Education: 60 semester credits/ 90 quarter credits (900 hours) B. Science Course Prerequisites for MSTCM:10.5 semester units (157.5 hours) C. Science Course Co requisites for MSTCM: 9.5 semester units (142.5 hours)Anatomy must be completed before the beginning of the second trimester.

The Academy of Chinese Culture and Health Sciences was established in 1982 by Master Wei Tsuei. At the time, Master Tsuei operated the Taoist Center, a non-profit organization focused on educating the masses in Taiji, Qigong, and meditation, as well as TCM. Even though the majority of the Western world did not accept acupuncture and TCM as a prominent, viable form of health care, Master Tsuei and the first Academy directors knew that introducing organized TCM to the Western world would be the first step towards realizing health care integration and bridging the cultural gap between the East and West. Thus, the Academy of Chinese Culture and Health Sciences was founded as a private, non-profit institute for the training and advancement of traditional Chinese medicine within the context of Chinese culture. As an accomplished practitioner of traditional Chinese medicine, Taiji Quan, and Taiji meditation, Master Tsuei paved the way for the first official Oakland TCM program. The Academy of Chinese Culture and Health Sciences became the second institution of TCM in the United States. Over the years, the Academy has matriculated 553 graduates...the passing rate for the California Licensing Exam always reaches 85% or so, and the National Certification Exam is often 100%, which proves the preparedness, competence, and excellence of the graduates. The program enables the students to lay a solid medical foundation with strong medical ethics. Currently, the Academy is approved by the California Bureau for Private Post secondary and Vocational Education as a degree-granting institution, and is accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. Today, it is a bona fide institution of higher learning, recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education, and the integration of TCM within the Western medical modality has become a reality.
