Founded in 1887 as Morehead Normal School the University is located in the foothills of the Daniel Boone National Forest in Rowan County. The nearly 500-acre main campus within the city limits of Morehead includes more than 50 major structures with a total replacement value of more than $144 million. The instructional plant includes 120 classrooms and 112 laboratories. Housing facilities include space for approximately 2,600 students in a variety of housing styles including traditional residence halls, suites and apartments.

Accommodation is provided in residence halls and apartments, the following are the residence halls where accommodation is provided with double occupancy: Alumni Tower (freshman/upper-class), Butler Hall (freshman/upper-class), Cartmell Hall (upper-class), Fields Hall (upper-class year-round housing), Thompson Hall (upper-class year-round housing), and Cooper Hall (freshman/upper-class). Also four person suites are available at East Mignon Hall (freshman), Mignon Hall (freshman/Upper-class), Mignon Tower (freshman/upper-class), Nunn Hall (off-line pending renovations), and West Mignon Hall (upper-class). The University also provides apartment type accommodation at the following places: Eagle Lake Apartments: contains 28 apartments in a mixture of one and two bedroom units. ELA apartments are fully furnished and feature numerous amenities. All ELA apartments contain a full kitchen furnished with refrigerator, stove, garbage disposal, dishwasher, and spacious cabinets. Mays Hall Apartments: The building contains 47 individual apartments featuring studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom furnished apartment units. Units feature a small kitchenette with refrigerator, two-burner cook-top, and convection oven/microwave. The building has a heating/air system with individual fan controls in each apartment. Laundry rooms are available in the central area of each floor. Normal Hall Apartments: This facility features 40 one-bedroom apartments. The kitchen is furnished with refrigerator and gas stove. The apartments are set-up with a front living room/kitchen area, a hallway/study area, and rear bedroom area (the private bathroom is connected to the rear bedroom). The building features radiant style heat with air conditioning provided by a rear bedroom window unit.
