Syracuse University provides housing for approximately 70 per cent of the undergraduate students. It provides housing opportunities to all students and assigns students as roommates on an equal basis without regard to race, religion, sexual orientation, or national origin. All residence halls are coeducational (coed) and include several floor plan configurations (coed by wing, by floor, by alternating rooms). All residence halls have single-gender community bathrooms. An open double is a room shared with one roommate; split double is a room divided by a wall that is shared with one roommate; suite is a group of rooms shared by two to six roommates, containing one or more bedrooms and a common living area; single is a room in which they have no roommate. Single rooms and suites are available on a limited basis. Most first-year students live in open- or split-double rooms. A limited number of students may be placed in suites or singles. Residence hall rooms vary in size and living style, facilities, and room types. All residence halls are near dining centers, provide direct connection to the campus computer network, have telephone and cable TV connections in all rooms, and are served by AirOrangeX, SU’s wireless network. Each residence hall uses a card key access security system and is always locked. Only resident students and guests are allowed to enter the residence halls. Other security features include main entrance staffing at hall desks during the day and evening hours, student security aides at main entrance doors at night, and audible alarms at secondary exits that are locked at all times. Every residence hall is equipped with fire suppression sprinkler systems and smoke detectors in each student room and in all other areas of the facility. A campus shuttle bus serves the residence halls.
