Course summary

This program is designed to prepare students as counselors in order to work in the community and in the schools in a manner consistent with the mission and strategic plan of Chaminade University. Essentially, this preparation results in general student learning outcomes relative to assisting children, youth, and adults in adapting to various educational, family, organizational, and societal demands. The course of study is structured so that all students have a strong theoretical foundation and basic counseling skills development before they enter the clinical portion of the program. The clinical portion occurs during the last three terms. Thus, students move from foundation courses through core and emphasis-specific courses. The program vision is to educate counselors to be successful, and in the process, establish and strengthen partnerships in the community. The School Counseling concentration is designed to prepare students as counselors within school settings, K-12, for the purpose of promoting and enhancing the learning process within the context of academic development, career development, and personal/social development. Curriculum content is based on the requirements set forth by the National Board for Certified Counselors and the Hawaii Teacher Standards Board. The program is also accredited by the Hawaii Teacher Standards Board. Students will be placed in schools, at both elementary and secondary levels, for the required practicum and internships. At least one of these schools will be a State of Hawaii Department of Education public school.
