Course summary
This curriculum is designed to increase the understanding of such critical issues as cultural awareness, utilization of community resources, social change and public policy. People who choose this specialization are often interested in pursuing management or community outreach positions in public or private organizations focused on serving community needs.
Program modules
Core modules include: HS5002 - Survey of Research in Human Development and Behavior, HS5006 - Survey of Research Methodology, HS5318 - Scope of Human Services, HS5334 - Ethnic and Cultural Awareness. Specialization modules include: HS5401 - History of Social Welfare, HS5402 - Social Change and Public Policy, HS5423 - Philosophy of Social Work, HS5436 - Utilization of Community Resources and HS5990 - Integrative Project for Human Services Learners.
Entry requirement for international students
Students must have completed bachelor's degree from an institution accredited by a U.S. Department of Education-recognized accrediting agency or an internationally recognized institution. They should possess a cumulative GPA of 2.3 from a bachelor's degree granting institution. International students whose language of instruction is not English are required to take one of the following tests: the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a minimum acceptable score of 550 on paper-based test, 213 on computer-based test with a score of 4.0 or higher on the Test of Written English (TWE), or 79 on internet based examination; Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB) score of 80; International English Language Testing System (IELTS) with a score of 6.5; or Pearson Test of English (PTE) score of 59.
