Course summary

This program provides advanced instruction and research opportunities in a broad range of computer engineering areas and is focused on both the theoretical and practical aspects of the state of the art in computer engineering. Fields of specialization in computer engineering include VLSI design and testing including mixed signal analog and digital design, computer systems and architecture, computer networks, and digital signal processing.

Program modules

Students must take the following three courses: CMPE 640: Advanced VLSI Design, CMPE 650: Digital Systems, CMSC 611: Computer Architecture. In addition each student must take one of the following four breadth courses: CMPE 642 Principles of Mixed Signal Design, CMPE 645 Computer Arithmetic Algorithms and Implementations, CMPE 646 VLSI Design Verification and Testing.

Entry requirement for international students

Students must have a completed M.S. degree in Computer Engineering from an accredited U.S. university with a minimum GPA of 3.6. Students to the graduate program in computer engineering are expected to have a strong background in computer engineering and mathematics courses. This includes calculus I and II, linear algebra, differential equations and probability and statistics in mathematics. They are expected to have taken the equivalent of the following UMBC courses: CMPE 212 Principles of Digital Design, CMPE 306: Basic Circuit Theory, CMPE 310 Systems Design and Programming, CMPE 314 Electronic Circuits, CMPE 315 Principles of VLSI Design, CMSC 341 Data Structures, CMSC 411 Computer Architecture. International students must have obtained minimum TOEFL scores of 550 on paper-based test, 213 on computer-based test and 80 on internet-based test.

The Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering has 40 full-time teaching and research faculty, 7 full-time lecturers and over 20 affiliate and part-time adjunct faculty. Current research concentrations include artificial intelligence, graphics and visualization, computer networks and systems, database and knowledge management, algorithms and computation theory, communications and signal processing, microelectronics, photonics and optical communications. The Department has over 1200 undergraduate and 300 graduate students. It is centered in the new Information Technology and Engineering (ITE) building, which has an excellent laboratory and computing environment, and in the Technology Research Center, which has specialized research laboratories. A variety of governmental and industrial sponsors provided more than $7.4M in new sponsored research awards in the 2003 fiscal year. The CSEE department offers degree programs leading to the B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. in Computer Science; the B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. in Computer Engineering; and the M.S. and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering. The B.S. programs provide a balanced practical and theoretical approach to the study of software and hardware, an approach that includes the latest advances in these two areas. The curriculum emphasizes the development of problem-solving skills applied to the analysis and design of real-world problems. Students are also given a broad background in the fundamentals of mathematics and the physical sciences. Each graduate degree program shares a similar structure and set of minimum requirements, and leads to the M.S. (with or without a thesis) or Ph.D. degree. Academic ties are strong with other departments and programs, including information systems, biology, the Institute for Global Electronic Commerce, geography, mathematics, mechanical engineering, physics, radiology (umab) and visual arts.

Residential Life (RL) is responsible for operating and maintaining the residential facilities as well as coordinating programs and services for approximately 3,900 students who live on campus. Residents may choose to live in one of several communities on campus. Freshmen who live on campus are required to live in one of five residence halls (Chesapeake, Patapsco, Potomac, Susquehanna, and Erickson). Upper-class students may apply to live in the halls, or in one of three apartment communities. All of the facilities are complete with: carpeting, individually controlled heating and air conditioning, and semi-private bathrooms shared by no more than five people. Students who need housing during semester breaks can choose Potomac Hall, which is designated as continuous occupancy. Several other special lifestyle options and living learning communities are tailored to meet student's interests and needs. All of the residence halls are similar and consist of suites of two rooms joined by a connecting bathroom. All rooms have phones with their own phone number and voice-mail. Rooms are furnished with one bed, wardrobe or closet, desk, and chair for each person assigned to the room. All rooms and hallways in these buildings are carpeted. Most rooms are doubles, with a limited number of singles and triples also available in the building. A cable television hook-up is available in each residence hall room. High-speed Ethernet data connectivity is available for each student in a single, double or triple room. On-campus housing for graduate students is available in the new Walker Avenue Apartments on the corner of Walker Avenue and Hilltop Circle. One wing of the apartment complex is available for graduate students. These are 2- or 4-bedroom fully furnished apartment suites. Residential Life provides temporary housing accommodations in the Hillside Apartment Community to UMBC graduate students who will be participating in campus orientation programs.
