Course summary
This is a rigorous program in mathematics consisting of extensive course work and original research in one of the department's many fields of expertise leading to a dissertation. Typically, the program is completed in five to six years. Applicants to the program should have a strong undergraduate background in mathematics. Combined graduate faculties from both institutions provide research opportunities in a variety of fields including: Algebra, Analysis, Geometric Group Theory, Kleinian Groups, Low-dimensional Topology, Mathematical Physics, Number Theory, Representation Theory and Teichmüller Theory.
Entry requirement for international students
A master degree is required for Ph.D. A bachelor degree is required for Masters for admission. TOEFL scores 540 Paper-Based Test (PBT), 207 Computer-Based Test (CBT), 76 Internet-Based Test (IBT) or IELTS (International English Language Testing System) Overall Band score of 6.5 or higher (if applicable). Acceptable scores for all colleges except the College of Nursing are 550+ on the paper and pencil test, 213+ on the computer test, or 79+ on the Internet-based test. For College of Nursing applicants, the acceptable scores are 600+ on the paper and pencil test, 250+ on the computer test, or 100+ on the Internet-based test. Only Official GRE (or MAT) scores sent or verified by ETS will be accepted.
