Course summary
This program provides a broad background in the field of neuroscience, from molecules to behavior, while allowing the student to focus on the research project in a specific area such as molecular neurobiology, neurochemistry, neuroendocrinology, neuroanatomy, and neurophysiology, among others. It offers maximal flexibility while adhering to the highest standards of excellence and rigor in graduate education. It provides students with advanced training in Systems and Organizational Neuroscience, Molecular and Cellular Neurobiology and Cognitive and Behavioral Neuroscience. Individual neurons and the molecules they synthesize are studied, circuits connecting groups of neurons and regions of the nervous system are examined and the function of the nervous system in the organism as a whole is investigated, both in the classroom and in the laboratory. Varied laboratory opportunities take advantage of particular strengths in translational neuroscience, developmental neurobiology, aging and neurodegeneration, mechanisms of neuropsychiatric disease, neurochemistry, neuroanatomy, cognitive neuroscience, memory, computational neuroscience, neuroimaging, vision, vestibular function, neuropathology, sensory signal transduction, neural and neuroendocrine receptor signaling, and synaptic and behavioral plasticity.
Program modules
The modules for first year are NeuroCore 1, NEU Journal Club, NeuroCore 2 followed by NeuroCore 3, Rotation/Independent Research, Dean's Seminars, Meet the Authors, Transl. Seminar Series, Resp. Conduct in Research, Methods in Sciences, Biostatistics. Modules for second year: any two advanced electives (see separate list), NEU Journal Club, Translational Seminar Series, Independent Research, Qualifying examination (advancement to candidacy), Defense of thesis proposal.
Entry requirement for international students
Students who have completed baccalaureate programs and who wish to pursue a doctoral degree in biomedical sciences research should apply online and submit required documents for consideration. Most applicants have completed the following courses: general biology, general chemistry, general physics, organic chemistry (2 semesters), mathematics (through integral calculus) and an introductory course in biochemistry. It is very important for applicants to have had basic science research experience. Letters from research mentors and written comments from the applicant about prior research experience are major components of the application file. They should indicate their field(s) of greatest interest and must supply official final transcripts from all institutions attended, three letters of recommendation, and official scores in the Graduate Record Examinations (verbal, quantitative, analytical). Applicants for whom English is not the first language must submit official scores of the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language). Applicants who have received a Bachelor's degree in the United States need not submit TOEFL results and all will be invited for interviews.
