About University of Helsinki

The University of Helsinki is the oldest and largest university in Finland, dating back to 1640. Established as the Royal University of Turku, one of the four national universities of the then Swedish kingdom, the University of Helsinki has come a long way from researching topics limited to Lutheran theology and European humanism, to being repeatedly ranked among the world's top 100 universities.

For more than 350 years, the University of Helsinki has sought solutions for global challenges and contributed to society, education and welfare through science. The University is home to an international scientific community of nearly 40,000 students and researchers.  It is also the only Finnish university to be a member of the League of European Research Universities, (LERU), an association of twenty-one leading European universities promoting opportunities for basic research in Europe.

A multidisciplinary university known for its high quality teaching and innovation, the University of Helsinki is consistently ranked among the 20 best universities in Europe. The University’s bouquet of bachelors, masters and doctoral programmes offered at its four city campuses – City Centre, Kumpula, Meilahti and Vikki – complement the cutting-edge research carried on across various domains.
