After I got back from Bangor after my semester abroad in Wales, I received a position with the British Council as an Ambassador for British Education, and this involved me in international education from then on. I am not certain what 'abroad' means now, as I think of Bangor as home, but I also think of the U.S. as home. I rather enjoy being bi-continental! I am still working for the international office here in Bangor, and have been for four years (I want to keep my foot in the door of international education), and I travel for them from time to time talking to people about Bangor.
I am really enjoying my course. It's permitting me to study precisely what I am interested in without superfluous courses. You need to be well organized and self-motivated, there's a lot of freedom within the course and you need to keep yourself on track, but that works well for me. They are supportive when I need to travel for research, and constructive when I have work to show them. If I were to try and convince prospective students to come and study here, I'd simply tell my story, and hopefully my happiness and my passion for the area and the academics would come across in my discussion. You can't beat the scenery, the faculty are friends, and the university is welcoming.
Hey there! I am Maggie Parke, originally from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, USA. The area was beautiful, the professors friendly, the courses stimulating and unique, and the school well-connected, supportive and flexible. I came back to Bangor after I finished my BA, I did my MA in Arthurian literature here, and Ive stayed for my PhD! I think Bangor feels like home within a day of being there. It's so friendly and accessible. It's a small-town feel with big-city connections. I love that you can get to London, Dublin and Manchester easily within a few hours, but I also love that you don't have to leave the city to find fun and adventure. When I am away from Wales I miss the scenery, my friends, and certain foods (hobnobs and decent tea)..but I think when I leave Bangor for good, I will most miss the feeling of community and friendship, as well as the academic opportunities that keep arising there.
I keep learning new things that I'll be able to do when I am done with the PhD, so I am not really sure what the future holds for me yet! Hopefully I will work in the industry for a bit; consulting on adaptations for studios, working in script development or possibly producing, but Ive also really enjoyed my time teaching and would be happy to continue that as well. We shall see!
