I think that anybody thinking of studying architecture should definitely consider doing so in Manchester. Come and see the area and feel the atmosphere we have. I am sure you will like it.

I have studied in the UK since I was 12. As I was already studying in the UK, I did not have to go through any lengthy selection process.

I didnt have any previous knowledge of the subject but Andy, one of my tutors last year, was amazing. He taught us in a really unique way and opened the door to the world of architecture for me. For example, he told us that to design a good house, you have to imagine the people moving around in it to get to the heart of the building. He tried to loosen us up. I think he knew that good ideas dont come out of tense brains. My University has a great architecture course, partly because it has a good ratio of maths to design in its course content. It has also been interesting using the city of Manchester in our projects. We had to design a house in an area of the city called Deansgate, which has a canal. Its a really unusual to see canals in Japan so I found this interesting and inspiring. It gave me a feel for the history of the city and helped my design.

My parents sent me to the UK as they believed that the education system would suit me best. I chose to study architecture because I enjoy art and design but wanted to combine this with my aptitude for my maths and physics. Architecture seemed like a great course and once I started my degree, I knew I wanted to make it my career.

After I finish my degree I might do my postgraduate studies back in Japan, just to learn architecture from a different point of view. Having said that, I need to decide what type of architecture I want to specialise in before I make a final decision.
