The reputation of Linguistics Department at Macquarie University is very well-received both domestically and internationally. There are many world-famous professors in TESOL field in the department. The course itself was up-to-date and very practical. It is suitable for language teachers or someone who wants to pursue this career. I enjoyed studying this master course. I have picked up several new ideas to apply to my teaching.

The minimum IELTS score for entering this course is Band 7 (in each skill) AND the candidate MUST have teaching experience. For the candidates who have no teaching background, they can enroll in certificate course first. It takes only one semester and includes practicum. The course offers limited numbers for internal (on-campus) students so it is relatively competitive.

Unfortunately, there are no scholarships offered at master level. Moreover, funding and scholarshipos are very limited for international students.

Coursework consisted of 8 units and you can add a research component (dissertation) to it if you wish to. There was an average of 3 assignments for each unit. The lecturers were adequately knowledgeable. There were also some guest lecturers for specific topics. The workload, in my opinion, was manageable. However, if you are not familiar with writing long academic essays, it can be a challenge.

Even though MQU is out in the Northwestern suburbs of Sydney, it has got most of the essentials. There are banks, post office, travel agent, sports facilities (gym & swimming pool), drugstore, bookstore and cafeteria on campus. Besides, there is a big shopping centre right across the street from the university. There is an international office taking care of overseas students. They arrange trips and other activities all year round. However, currently there is no official Thai student association operated at MQU. Most of us make friends through acquaintances.

As mentioned earlier, this course is very practical and highly suitable for teachers. Once you graduate, you can advance your career into academic field (e.g. lecturer or researcher) or educational management (e.g. program director, principal). After I finished the course, I went back home to work for a couple of years and now I am back at MQU again, doing my Ph.D. in the same field.
