The best thing about uni is the freedom because you can choose the best timetable for yourself which for me included lots of sleep ins and only one class on a Friday! The hardest thing is making sure you keep up with the work because there are no teacher's pushing you to finish assignments or study for exams. My overall experience of uni would be that it's fun it opens you up to a massive world of networking and socializing and provides you with the tools to succeed in your chosen field. Personally I've enjoyed the social aspect of uni but also the hands on practical classes which give you a taste for what's beyond your degree. My piece of advice would be that if your having trouble understanding anything ask your lecturer. They may seem intimidating or nasty but in my experience if you show genuine interest (not just asking for answers) they are really useful.

I applied for uni through my careers councilor (using VTAC) at high school which I think is the easiest way to do it because they can double check that everything is done correctly and they can also provide good information on what exactly each course involves. Enrolling in my course was pretty straight forward. My uni sent me forms outlining how to enroll which was basically which day to show up at uni sign my name and get my photo taken for my id card. I don't know how hard it was to get into my course but I think it was pretty competitive as I've met a lot of students who originally applied for medicine who have exceptional marks but didn't quite make it through the UMAT. My advice for future students would be to check online when enrollment dates are for your uni and if you haven't heard from them within a couple days before hand make sure you contact them. Same goes if you have any questions - it's a much safer option to ask then to stuff up the enrollment process and get whacked with a late enrollment fee.

I looked on the uni website for details of scholarships and you need to look early because scholarships that take in to account your VCE performance tend to have closing dates before the end of year 12 so you need to start thinking about them early. If you can demonstrate financial hardship there are heaps of scholarships available at Monash Uni but I've never had to apply for one. Just make sure you get in early to check out your options so you don't miss out. Oh and make sure you apply for the right faculty if you're applying for a faculty scholarship because one of my friends missed out because he accidentally applied for the wrong one!

I love my course because I get to learn all about the body and how people and animals function and how things go wrong. You need year 12 chemistry and english for my course and I definitely used the chemistry for first semester of first year. To be honest first semester was a bit boring because it was a lot of trying to get everyone on the same level in regards to biology physics and chemistry but second semester has been a lot more interesting looking at neurobiology genetics and epidemiology. There is a bit of statistic work involved but it's a breeze if you've done year 12 further. All my lecturers have been really helpful when I have questions and overall there's only been one real dud. It's important to remember that to get the most out of your tutors you need to ask lots of questions and so it helps to do the reading before the tutorial so you actually have questions. I'm in a HECS place at the moment so I haven't been hit for fees but I would say it's good value for money because the government recently cut in half the expenses for most science courses. For anyone looking to study biomedical science I would strongly suggest paying attention in Chemistry and although I didn't do biology or physics in year 12 and did well I noticed that people who did them in year 12 definitely had an advantage.

My uni is right next to my house so it's brilliant. I use the doctors clinic and sports facilities and they are both fantastic although the gym is a bit expensive. The food shops are normal crappy take away joints with pizza and burgers everywhere and there's also a full on vegetarian and vegan restaurant which is really cheap so it's good if you only have a few dollars for lunch. I would suggest bringing lunch though cause it can get really expensive buying. A few of my friends have got jobs on campus working in the campus bar or shops and you can apply for jobs through student services.

My job prospects will definitely increase after my degree because I will have the skills to go straight into medical research which is a booming field at the moment. I'm thinking of applying for post-graduate medicine which I can get into from my course and will be a further 4 years of study. The university promotes honor's years and research projects within the university so there's heaps of different options once you've finished your degree.
