Having stepped fresh out of a private high school and being spoon-fed for a large portion of my life university life was... Overwhelming! There weren't any attendance rolls taken lecturers never seemed to mine if you were sleeping at the back of the lecture theatre or chatting on MSN. Falling into a lifestyle driven by Thursday $1 pots and happy hour at the bar it seemed that uni was as good as it could get. Knowing that everyone's just as fresh as you are to the lifestyle it's not difficult to strike up conversation with the random sitting next to you- and before you know it you're out every second weekend partying the night away and car-pooling together like the best of friends. However with this sudden influx of liberation came its price- unlike high school topics are taught exceptionally quickly and in the blink of an eye you've fallen behind. Ongoing assessment grades drop and nothing is as easy as you once thought.
VTAC did everything for me I just had to pay the $22 service fee and place my preferences. As for any engineering degree at Monash preference is given to those based on ENTER keeping in mind the pre-requisite subjects (at least 30 in English or 25 in any other English 20 in maths methods and one of chemistry or physics). Entry into straight engineering for 2008 the clearly-in ENTER was 91.30 and fringe was 88.05- so it's not the easiest course to get in to! Because I did two languages and specialist maths in VCE the mark-ups helped me get the ENTER I needed.
Alongside Monash academic and equity scholarships the Engineering Department offers a wide range of scholarships. To find out about these it's best to ask your careers advisor for a Scholarship Handbook check out the stands at Open Day or to hop onto the website and do some research. You only need to make one application and you're automatically registered for consideration for all of the scholarships available (except gender or socio-economically specific ones of course).
As a first year engineering student we're all offered a pool of subjects that give us insight into the specific streams of engineering offered. As a student who's enrolled in a specialised engineering stream I don't really need to worry about competing to get into my preferred stream however I still do this 'general first year'. It allows everyone see that all the streams are in one way or another linked and complement each other. First year subjects are claimed to be simple but be wary that this is assumed for people who performed well in the relevant VCE units physics for example. I'd suggest that if you're not confident with your performance in year 12 take the foundation units to reiterate what you know and to patch up any holes in your knowledge- this will definitely help you once you start studying stream-specific units in the next semester. Generally I think the course is set up quite well as we're provided with private consultation times to see our lecturers or tutors small tutorial classes to go through and revise the content in detail and practical/laboratory sessions to enhance our understanding of the subject. Definitely good value for money.
Apart from going out for a movie or a drink every now and then there's work! Contrary to popular belief university students aren't necessarily forced to ditch class in order to gain a steady income- there are plenty of flexible companies who do their best to roster shifts to a system that best suits you. Also if you join as many clubs as you can there are heaps of events that are organised outside uni and are a great way to meet new people with similar interests!
Personally I think having a tertiary degree would definitely increase my job prospects. However considering the current state of the industry I'm a bit wary- but that's why I do a double degree! Also after completing my undergraduate degree I might consider going on to do postgraduate.
