It's amazing the many types of people you meet and work with. You make so many friends in many different circles. I had no idea that life in the city was so different to home. You're part of a much larger world and community. You might feel a bit lost at the beginning but exposure to university life makes you realize how much you havent seen yet and all the fantastic opportunities that await you.
UAC does all the hard work for you if you're just leaving Yr 12. The selection process is based on demand so just because you got the UAI to get into the top course doesn't mean you have to. You should always do a course that is aligned with your interests otherwise you will struggle.
The larger scholarships are the coop ones which means that you will get to complete work placements during your course for your sponsor. These are course specific such as Commerce Engineering IT. You'll be doing the same course with other scholarship students but you're given some choice of what majors you can take. Selection is very competitive. Other scholarships for financial assistance you can apply once you've started uni. They're offered by the university themselves and judged case by case. Financial assistance is also offered by the government - Youth Allowance and Centrelink.
It's the best experience I've ever had. Before university I never heard of double degrees. These courses are perfect for those who aren't quite sure what they want to do yet because it doesn't limit you to one specific area. Most employers also value you having a second degree because it demonstrates that you are interested in learning and personal development.
UTS is smack in the middle of the CBD. One thing I always joke about is how much shopping I get done around my classes. I'm never rushed for shopping during Christmas. Being in the middle of the CBD means you meet a lot more different people. We see a lot of tourists because we're just on the other side of Darling Harbour. Food is great in Chinatown and travelling is so convenient.
I value UTS degrees because of the practical experience you get that you might not get elsewhere. We also have strong links to industry employers. I don't think I would become as great a graduate if I had studied elsewhere.
