I finished my diploma last year and it was a really fun but full on year. Beauty therapy is a versatile, fun industry to be a part of. It’s a great job, you chat to people while making them beautiful. And it’s handy to have some beauty tips for yourself. This was a good diploma which equipped me with many different skills that I will use for my career, from knowledge on historical make up (So I can do things like bronze Brad Pitt up in Troy), do nails, waxing, make up and any beauty spa stuff.

As this is a private course, the guidelines to getting in aren’t as stringent as university. Basically, anyone can do this course if they want to and they’re prepared to pay the fees. But of course, you would have to have an interest in beauty therapy.

What funding/scholarship opportunities are available? Where did you find them? What suggestions do you have on how to best secure financial assistance? I’m pretty sure there’s no scholarships for this course! If you want that sort of thing, they have other beauty therapy courses at TAFE that are cheaper. But I guess this one is good because it’s a bit more ‘prestigious.’

It’s expensive because you need to pay upfront or each week, and it’s a lot of money for a student. My friends at uni are paying a similar amount for their fees, but at least they can defer their payment or it comes out of their wages one day or something. It’s pretty hard to save all that money at once, it really does help if a parent is able to help you and you pay them back or you could either work for a year before the course and save up for it. The best bits about the course is the fact that you learn make up and waxing, and you can practise on your friends. Even though the course is expensive, I’ve never had to pay for professional waxing or facials, as students practise on each other. And getting free Dermilogica samples is pretty cool!

This is more a private institute than a uni with a million clubs. It’s kind of got a professional feel to it, we come in and work hard and then go. But I have made friends with some of the girls in my course and we hang out. There’s not accommodation there or anything and they don’t provide anything like that. I live in Brisbane and most people in my course are locals as well.

Jobs prospect after this course are looking pretty good. There’s always demand for beauty therapists and I could do cool travel related things with it like go work on a cruise ship in the Bahamas.
