I needed somewhere that I could go regularly and have a structure put around me. I chose Glasgow because it was a research-led institution and it was accredited by the Association of MBAs. The timetable also suited my full-time employment. I attended the core subject classes on Fridays and Saturdays and then the intensive elective schools. I went to a couple of open days and liked the positive feedback: they actually understand where you are trying to get to as an engineer.
Studying In an international group was an eye-opener for me. By the end of It I'd made a lot of good friends from across the world. The MBA is not the end for me. I've applied to Miller to do an MSc in Project Management at Heriot-Watt, possibly starting in September. I've been away from studying for two years now and I'm really quite hungry to do something else.
I tend to challenge everything now, rather than accept people's viewpoints. I break it down to key questions and key components and I find that I'm more adaptive and more flexible. I've got the processes and tools and they've given me applied techniques. I am the services manager with Miller Construction. My expectation, when I was first looked for an MBA, was a qualification to boost my career. I felt the MBA was a precursor to moving into management it would open the door to certain things. The MBA was one of the things which sold me to Miller.
